Over her 21 year career, Frances Houghton won three Olympic silver medals, four World Championship golds, and held two world records, all in different teams and under four different coaches. But ‘success’ is an external interpretation of what people see from the outside. It doesn’t convey the internal lived experience.
Learnings from Five Olympic Games is a handbook of my performance learnings. Every element that lay behind creating Houghton’s ultimate race is distilled into simple points – from the characteristics of the best teams she was in and how they built trust, to how she learnt to handle nerves and her go-to mantras.
Stories and illustrations are interspersed throughout to bring those learnings to life. She also tells the wider story of her career; how two years from her final Olympic Games she changed her mindset from all about winning, to focusing on the people she was working with, and how her mantra: ‘What can we create together?’ took her closer to Gold than she ever thought possible.
